Grant applications accepted

The Dairy Business Innovation Alliance is accepting applications for its Dairy Business Builder Grant program. Dairy farmers, contractors and processors in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin are eligible. Grants of up to $50,000 will be awarded through a competitive process.

Eligible projects will include dairy farm diversification, creation of value-added dairy products, dairy by-product or commodity enhancement, and dairy export marketing efforts.

Interested applicants are encouraged to view the alliance’s “Helpful Hints” webinar. It provides information about the grant program, an overview of the application process, and tips for a competitive application.

The alliance in 2020 distributed $230,000 to 13 dairy and cooperative companies in the first round of grants. In 2021, it awarded grants totaling more than $1 million to 25 dairy companies and cooperatives.

The Dairy Business Innovation Alliance is a partnership between the Center for Dairy Research and the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association. It develops and administers programs that provide technical assistance and grants to dairy farms and businesses in the Upper Midwest.

Applications must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. Central Standard Time. March 31 at 5 p.m. cdr.wisc.edu/dbia for more information.

Award nominations sought

The Dairy Shrine is seeking nominations for its Recognition Awards – Guest of Honour, Pioneer and Distinguished Breeder of Dairy Cattle.

The guest of honor is presented to an active contemporary dairy leader for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the dairy industry. It has been awarded annually since 1949, when Dean H. Kildee was named the first recipient.

Each year several dairy leaders, living or deceased, are honored as pioneers by the National Dairy Shrine for their service and leadership in the dairy industry.

The Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder recognizes active and progressive dairy farmers who, through their expertise in managing a dairy herd based on sound genetics and business principles, serve as a role model for their fellow dairy farmers across the country. .

The portraits and achievements of all winners are on permanent display in the National Dairy Hall of Fame at the National Dairy Shrine Museum in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin.

Laboratory services, cooperative fusion

CentralStar Cooperative will expand its dairy herd information and milk analysis services, starting March 1. .

Dairy Lab Services and CentralStar process records through the Dairy Records Management Service. There will be no change to how producers receive reports or what type of reports they rely on, according to CentralStar.

Sample processing will eventually move from the Dubuque lab to the CentralStar lab in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. Samples can be analyzed for over a dozen components and characteristics such as butterfat, protein, somatic cell count, solids non fat, milk urea nitrogen, Johne’s disease, bovine viral diarrhoea, neospora, mastitis and pregnancy. The Dairy Foods Association honors two

The International Dairy Foods Association recently recognized the leadership of Ed Mullins, Senior Executive of Prairie Farms Dairy Inc., and Dan Zagzebski, President and CEO of Great Lakes Cheese. Each man received the winner’s award from the International Dairy Foods Association at the organization’s annual Dairy Forum.

The award is given to a leader in the dairy industry who has made a significant contribution to the development and growth of the dairy industry. Applicants from across the dairy industry as well as suppliers and academics are eligible.

Mullins began his career with Prairie Farms in 1980. He became CEO and Executive Vice President of the co-op before assuming his current role as a senior executive. He sits on several industry-related boards, including the International Dairy Foods Association, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture, MilkPEP, the Milk Industry Foundation, and the Missouri Grocers Association.

Zagzebski has been with Great Lakes Cheese for 15 years and has served as President and CEO since 2015. He is an industry veteran with over 25 years of experience. His focus on infrastructure and innovation has helped his company become a leader in cheese packaging and manufacturing in the United States.

Prior to his current role as President and CEO, Zagzebski held various positions of increasing responsibility, including Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Sales and Product Development. He joined the company when Great Lakes Cheese purchased Lemke Cheese and Packaging in Wausau, Wisconsin, where he was co-owner and CEO. Visit idfa.org for more information.

The US Department of Agriculture recently appointed 12 members to serve on the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board. The 12 appointees will serve three-year terms, beginning October 31, 2024. Newly appointed members are listed.

The council is made up of 36 dairy producer members. They represent 12 geographic regions in the United States and one import member who represents importers of dairy products. The council was established by the Dairy Production Stabilization Act of 1983 to develop and administer a coordinated advertising and promotion program aimed at increasing demand for dairy products and ingredients.

Thai retailers will visit Wisconsin

The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and the Center for Dairy Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison will help host a group of cheese retailers and cheese marketing specialists from Thailand in 2022. The visit will be supported by a grant from the U.S. Department’s Cochran Fellowship Program. of the External Agricultural Service of Agriculture.

The program was developed in conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Commerce and Consumer Protection. The Wisconsin cheese industry was also included in the planning and coordination.

The grant covers the cost of an intensive two-week training program to help seven Thai fellows learn about artisanal and gourmet cheeses through interactions with manufacturers, companies, distributors and government partners. The goal is to encourage US cheese exports to Thailand.

Thai Fellows will visit dairy farms, cheese factories, specialty cheese shops, retail grocery chains, restaurants and bars. They will meet with representatives from Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Commerce and Consumer Protection, the US Dairy Export Council and other organizations and agencies.

The visit is expected to take place in the summer of 2022, but dates have not been finalized. Visit cdr.wisc.edu for more information.
