Publicly listed agribusiness Kakuzi Plc has received global certification confirming that its avocado and blueberry farms adhere to sustainable approaches to water resource management.

The company has been awarded the GLOBALG.AP “SPRING” Certificate of Compliance, a farm-level certification that helps growers, retailers and traders demonstrate their commitment to sustainable water management.

According to Kakuzi Plc Managing Director, Mr. Chris Flowers, the company has received the certificate to add to its existing GLOBALG.AP Good Agricultural Practices accreditation.

“Following a series of intensive on-site audits undertaken by UK-based NSF Certification UK Ltd inspectors at the Kakuzi avocado and blueberry production sites in Murang’a County, the company has obtained the SPRING Certificate of Conformity which will remain active for the next year,” said Flowers.

He added that at its Avocado and Blueberry sites, Kakuzi deploys advanced precision irrigation systems, including micro-sprinklers for watering avocados powered by an elaborate information technology system.

“In our avocado and blueberry orchards, we continue to leverage technology for water conservation and efficient crop production,” Flowers said.

As part of the SPRING – Sustainable Program for Irrigation and Groundwater Use certification program, food system actors must now provide evidence documenting their efforts to manage water-related risks and promote sustainable practices .

SPRING is a farm-level add-on that helps growers, retailers and traders demonstrate their commitment to sustainable water management and can be implemented with the GLOBALG.AP IFA Standard for Crops .

SPRING incorporates a wide range of criteria to assess sustainable on-farm water management, including legal compliance of water sources and extraction rates, monitoring of water use, impact of producers on sustainable watershed management, best practices in water management, source water protection and measures to demonstrate continuous improvement in water management.

The SPRING add-on was originally developed by Swiss distributor Coop in 2016 in collaboration with GLOBALG.AP. Ownership of the standard was officially transferred to GLOBALG.AP in July 2019.

GLOBALG.AP is a brand of smart agricultural insurance solutions developed by FoodPLUS GmbH in Cologne, Germany, with the cooperation of producers, retailers and other food industry stakeholders. These solutions include a range of standards for safe, socially and environmentally responsible agricultural practices.

The most widely used GLOBALG.AP standard is Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA), applicable to fruits and vegetables, aquaculture, floriculture, animal husbandry, etc. This standard also forms the basis of the GGN label: the consumer label for certified, responsible and transparent agriculture.

The GLOBALG.AP brand began its journey as EUREPGAP in 1997. Twenty-five years later, more than 200,000 producers are GLOBALG.AP certified in 134 countries. Nearly 150 team members worldwide are dedicated to spreading responsible farming practices to ensure safe food for future generations. www.globalgap.org
