The supply of Kisan Rail was announced in the 2020-2021 Union budget and was launched for perishable goods in September 2021. Kisan Rail transformed small stations into large agricultural loading centers and enriched small ones farmers and marginal farmers due to stops at small stations. .

Smaller stations like Sangola, Jeur, Rahuri, Kopargaon, Yeola, Niphad have become major fruit and vegetable loading centers.

Kisan’s first rail service was reported between Devlali of Maharashtra and Danapur of Bihar on August 7, 2021 by Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar, and has been extended to Muzaffarpur.

The transportation of fruits and vegetables by Kisan Rail receives a subsidy of 50 percent on the applicable tariff, by the Ministry of Food Processing and Industries, so that farmers can realize better value for their products.
