National conference on underutilized horticultural genetic resources organized by ICAR | Pune News

PUNE: A two-day virtual national conference on underutilized horticultural genetic resources, their conservation and utilization was organized recently by the ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair, in collaboration with the Andaman Science Association and the Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi.
Dr. Chittaranjan Kole, President of the International Climate Resilient Crop Genomics Consortium opened the conference.
He emphasized the conservation of island biodiversity and its sustainable use to mitigate the challenges posed by climate change.
Dr Anand Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticultural Sciences), ICAR said there is a need to undertake systematic research on lesser known perennial horticultural species, especially in the wake of climate change.
Dr BK Pandey, ADG (Horticultural Sciences), ICAR said there was an urgent need to research the species native to the island, while Brahma Singh, Founder of Brahma Singh Horticultural Foundation, New Delhi, stressed the importance underutilized horticultural genetic resources with particular reference. with sea buckthorn.
Nearly 291 participants from 89 organizations in 30 states/union territories attended the conference.
