Taos County offers shelter and resources to residents displaced by wildfire | public safety

The evacuation center that was previously located in the Peñasco High School gymnasium at 13 Old School Road is now closed. The Juan I. Gonzales Taos County Agricultural Center, located at 202 Chamisa Road in Taos, is now the primary shelter for Taos County evacuees. Emergency shelter, if needed, will be housed at Taos Middle School.

Taos County officials have stepped up to help nearby residents who have been displaced from their homes by the recent wildfires in New Mexico by setting up evacuation centers and making other resources available in the region.

Evacuation centers are available at the following locations:

  • Juan I. Gonzales Taos County Agricultural Center, 202 Chamisa Road, NM 87571, 575-770-6416
  • Taos County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo Grounds (no RV hookups), 230 Camino de la Merced, Taos, NM 87571, 575-770-1490

Locations accepting RVs for free:

  • Red River RV Park (free, 35 hookups available), 100 High-Cost Trail, Red River, NM 87558

Resources for volunteers and donations:

The Taos Youth & Family Center, 407 Paseo del Cañon East in Taos, will be used in case other centers reach capacity, county officials said.

Acting Taos City Manager Andrew Gonzales said cots are available at each location.
