TNAU signs pact with World Resources Institute

Tamilnadu Agricultural University has signed an agreement with the World Resources Institute, India, to provide green cover across the country and assess carbonization through tree plantations.

A Forest College and Research Institute press release said the agreement would promote the development of agroforestry with inclusive social and economic empowerment among rural communities. The University has signed another agreement with VRD Best Foods, Madurai, to promote agroforestry in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, and another with the Rotary club of Mettupalayam for student development activities.

The Forest College and Research Institute established an Industrial Agroforestry Consortium (CIAF) in 2014 and the consortium’s annual workshop was held here recently. The agreements were signed at the event. The activities of the consortium, which has 350 members, include the creation of decentralized nurseries for the expansion of the area through industrial agroforestry, the creation of links between skilled labor and other stakeholders in the planting, felling, transportation and marketing of wood, adding value to wood-based waste, creating a price support mechanism and providing insurance for trees, KT Parhiban said, Dean (Forestry) and Consortium Coordinator.
