World has no alternative to Ukrainian agricultural products: official

Countries that depend on the import of agricultural products, especially countries in the Middle East and Africa, will not be able to do without agricultural products from Ukraine, because there is no way to replace its volumes in from other countries, said Ukraine’s First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy. and Food Taras Vysotsky said Friday.

“We supplied 10 percent of the world’s wheat exports, more than 15 to 20 percent barley, more than 50 percent sunflower oil. On average, 50 million tons of agricultural products were exported from Ukraine. In peak years, this figure even reached 65 million tons. Today there is no way to find an alternative to such volumes and replace our products. It is physically impossible to do this even in the next three to five years,” the deputy minister told national TV channel 24.

Russia’s blockade of Ukraine’s key seaports in Odessa and Mykolaiv led to a significant drop in Ukraine’s agricultural exports to 15-20% of pre-war figures, deputy minister says . This has already led to its sharp rise in prices and supply shortages around the world, mainly in countries in the Middle East and North Africa, he added.

“If the situation with the war and the blockade of ports continues, for example, for up to six months, the countries of these regions, in principle, will not have grain. And this means famine,” Vysotsky said. .

According to him, the Ukrainian government is struggling to find alternative ways to develop exports of agricultural products, which quadrupled its exports in April compared to March 2022.

“It’s still not enough, but there is significant progress. And we see in May that there is still an opportunity to increase export performance. Therefore, there are two strategies here: first, our victory and the unblocking of ports, and second, the expansion of these alternative ways of marketing products,” noted the Deputy Minister.
